WATCH: Team Wins Race… Then Gets Disqualified Seconds Later Over Finish-Line Celebration

High School Team Stripped of State Title After Finish-Line Celebration

A North Carolina high school track and field team has been stripped of a state championship after officials disqualified an anchor runner for what was ruled an unsportsmanlike celebration gesture moments before crossing the finish line.

The incident occurred during the final event of the state championship meet, the 4x400-meter relay, where Mallard Creek High School was leading and appeared to have secured victory in both the race and the overall team standings.

However, officials intervened after video review showed the anchor runner raising his hand in celebration just before crossing the finish line.

According to race officials, the gesture was interpreted as taunting under National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rules, which prohibit actions considered unsportsmanlike during competition.

Disqualification Cost Team the Championship

Following the ruling, the relay win was disqualified, resulting in the team losing the points needed to secure the overall state title.

As a result, Mallard Creek was dropped to second place in the final standings, and the championship was awarded to their closest competitor.

The decision immediately sparked confusion and emotional reactions from athletes, coaches, and spectators who had witnessed what appeared to be a championship-winning finish.

Officials Defend Decision Under Sportsmanship Rules

State athletics officials later defended the call, stating that track and field regulations clearly allow disqualification for taunting or inappropriate celebration during competition.

According to meet rules, athletes are expected to maintain sportsmanship throughout the race, and violations can result in disqualification of both the individual and team results depending on the event structure.

Officials also noted that judgment calls on sportsmanship are made by meet referees and are considered final unless successfully appealed through governing bodies.

Team and Community React With Frustration

The disqualification has sparked widespread debate across social media and sports communities, with many arguing that the celebration was minor and not intended as disrespect toward competitors.

Supporters of the team have called the ruling harsh, especially given the high stakes of a state championship decided in the final event.

Others, however, argue that rules must be applied consistently to maintain fairness in competition.

The school has reportedly filed an appeal with the state athletics association, though initial rulings have remained unchanged.
