Tinubu Approves Nigeria’s Largest Military Expansion: 28,000 New Soldiers, 4 New Army Divisions

Nigeria has announced its biggest military expansion in recent history after President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 28,000 new soldiers and the creation of four additional army divisions, bringing the total to 12.

The government says the move is aimed at strengthening coordination, intelligence sharing, and rapid response across regions affected by Islamist insurgency, separatist violence, and kidnapping gangs. Three new army headquarters will also be established in the north‑east and central Nigeria, areas that have seen persistent attacks.

The decision follows a deadly week in which 20 villagers were killed in Zamfara state and 46 students were abducted in Borno, though the students were later rescued by the army.

Tinubu previously announced plans to recruit 50,000 new police officers and allocated a record ₦5.41 trillion to defence and security in the national budget — signalling a major shift toward expanding Nigeria’s security architecture.
