The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has now claimed more than 1,000 lives, according to data from the DRC Health Ministry cited by the US CDC. Out of 1,035 deaths, 1,033 occurred in DRC, with two recorded in Uganda.
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, which currently has no available vaccine, making containment significantly harder. The DRC has reported 2,536 confirmed cases out of 2,557 total, while Uganda has 20 confirmed cases and France has one imported case.
The World Health Organization estimates the death rate in DRC to be between 30% and 50%, reflecting the severity of the strain. On 25 June, the Africa CDC announced that $1.4 billion is urgently needed for response efforts. This week, the African Development Bank approved a $13 million grant to support DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan in strengthening surveillance, treatment, and emergency operations.
