Iran Releases Initial Terms of Draft US–Iran Peace Understanding

Iranian state media outlet Eghtesad has released what it describes as the initial framework of a “Memorandum of Understanding” connected to an emerging US–Iran peace deal. While no final agreement has been signed, the details shared outline the broad commitments both sides are reportedly considering as part of ongoing negotiations.

According to the Iranian report, the draft understanding focuses heavily on military de‑escalation, maritime security, and international oversight through the United Nations.

Key Points Released by Iranian State Media

Iran’s initial outline includes the following provisions:

  • US military forces would withdraw from areas surrounding Iran, reducing direct military pressure in the region.
  • The US Navy would lift its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping corridor.
  • Iran would commit to restoring commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to pre‑war levels within one month.
  • Military vessels are excluded from the draft agreement, meaning the focus is strictly on commercial transit.
  • Iran and Oman would jointly manage and coordinate ship traffic through the Strait, signaling a regional approach to maritime oversight.
  • If a final deal is reached within 60 days, the agreement would be formalized as a binding UN Security Council resolution, giving it international legal weight.

What This Means for the Region

If confirmed and finalized, the framework would represent one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs between the US and Iran in years.

The Strait of Hormuz—through which a major share of the world’s oil supply passes—has long been a flashpoint for geopolitical tension. A deal could:

  • Reduce the risk of military confrontation

  • Stabilize global shipping and energy markets

  • Strengthen regional cooperation between Iran, Oman, and international partners

However, these details come solely from Iranian state media, and US officials have not yet publicly confirmed the specifics.
