Greece Greenlights €3B ‘Achilles’ Shield’ — Massive Israeli Air‑Defense Deal to Transform National Security

 


Greece’s top defense body, KYSEA, is set to approve a landmark €3 billion ($3.42B) procurement of Israeli air‑ and missile‑defense systems — one of the largest defense deals in Greek history.

The package forms the backbone of “Achilles’ Shield,” a new multi‑layered national air‑defense network designed to counter drones, fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats. The architecture will integrate seamlessly with Greece’s existing Patriot batteries, F‑35s, F‑16 Vipers, and naval assets.

Systems Included in the Deal

SPYDER — short‑to‑medium range interceptor for drones & aircraft

David’s Sling — medium‑range interceptor for cruise missiles

Barak MX — modular long‑range system capable of engaging ballistic threatsThe deal also includes command‑and‑control integration, radar networking, and joint operational architecture with the Hellenic Air Force.

Greek Industry Participation

Greek defense companies will take on about 25% of the work, including:

  • Command‑system development 
  • Maintenance infrastructure 
  • Local production of components
  • Long‑term sustainment 

This marks one of Greece’s largest domestic‑industry defense offsets in years.
